Chris Waller trains Oaks day treble

Thursday 7 November 2013, 3:55pm

Chris Waller has capped an Oaks day treble at Flemington with his first Melbourne Cup carnival winner for the Ingham family.

Dystopia, who races in the famous cerise silks of the Inghams, brought up a special win for Sydney's premier trainer in the Group Three G H Mumm Stakes (1100m) on a day when Waller left the track with three winners from as many runners.

"It's my first win during Cup week for the Inghams," Waller said.

"We went so close on Saturday with Catkins in the Myer Classic and that was heartbreaking for them.

"This is a small consolation but a very monumental one as well."

Waller was selected by Bob Ingham to train his horses when the owner started a new racing venture after selling his racing and breeding operation, Woodlands, to Sheikh Mohammed in 2008.

Dystopia was among the first yearlings Ingham purchased to be trained by Waller in a $20 million spending spree at the 2008 Easter Yearling sale.

Waller started Oaks day on Thursday with wins to three-year-old filly Marmelo and import Multilateral before Dystopia made up for a luckless second in the same race 12 months earlier with a 1-1/2 length win.

Dystopia ($5) defeated Shamal Wind ($6.50) with a short head to She Can Skate ($7) third.

Waller's treble came on the back of the trainer's Group One double with Zoustar and Red Tracer on the first day of the four-day Flemington carnival last Saturday.

Waller opened a satellite stable in Melbourne early this year and hopes to expand from 10 boxes at Flemington to 20.

"We're going to grow a bit down here eventually and hopefully have a regular dominance," Waller said.
