Red Tracer suspect over mile: Blackiston

Friday 1 November 2013, 2:44pm

Red Tracer may be one of the shortest favourites at Flemington on Derby Day, but trainers of her Myer Classic rivals are gambling on the fact she hasn't won over 1600 metres in four starts at the distance.

The highly credentialled six-year-old claimed an overdue Group One win in the Tatt's Tiara (1400m) in June and confirmed her favouritism to win a second with victory in the Group Two Tristac Stakes two weeks ago.

But in her four races at 1600m, including last year's Myer in which she ran 10th, her best result has been a third in the 2011 Epsom Handicap at Randwick won by Secret Admirer.

Trainer Nigel Blackiston, who will saddle up $41 outsider You're So Good, says the amount of ground she made up on Red Tracer in the closing stages of the Tristarc gives him hope she can upset the favourite.

"She gave Red Tracer six, seven, eight, maybe nine lengths at the top of the straight and she only got beaten by four," Blackiston said.

"Nothing finished off better than she did and that shows me she has come back to the old You're So Good which finished second to Ferlax in the Australian Guineas.

"Red Tracer is no good thing at a mile - she's had four starts at a mile and hasn't won yet."

Blackiston also takes Let's Make Adeal to Flemington on Saturday in a last-ditch attempt to get the mare into the Melbourne Cup via the Lexus Stakes (2500m).

A granddaughter of 1991 Melbourne Cup winner Let's Elope, Let's Make Adeal needs to win the Lexus to get a Cup start but if she doesn't, Blackiston is prepared to wait until next year.

"If we get to the Cup this year it's meant to be. If not, we won't panic, we'll try again next year," he said.
