Fire Up Fifi looks to turn the tables

Nash Rawiller has gained a valuable insight into his main rival in the Myer Stakes, giving Fire Up Fifi a workout at Flemington.

Rawiller will be aboard dominant favourite Red Tracer in the Group One Myer (1600m) but has told Fire Up Fifi's trainer Robert Heathcote his mare is in great shape ahead of the race.

The Chris Waller-trained Red Tracer is a proven Group One performer and has had the better of Fire Up Fifi in both the Dane Ripper Stakes in June and the Tristarc Stakes last Saturday week.

After stretching Fire Up Fifi out around Flemington on Tuesday, Rawiller gave Heathcote encouragement, saying the mare would take some beating on Saturday.

Heathcote, Brisbane's leading trainer, says his six-year-old grey, who has drawn barrier one in her first Group One race, has adapted well to the Melbourne direction of racing as shown by her Blazer Stakes win earlier this month.

"The advantage she has over some of the others is that she is a proven miler," Heathcote said.

"She's strong and she has worked well, and her runs down in Melbourne have been fantastic. Even her run in the Tristarc when she finished fifth was a cracker against the pattern of the race."

Her time for the final 1000m of the Tristarc was marginally quicker than Red Tracer as she cut down a 16-length start to just three at the finish.

Fire Up Fifi, who was won $1.8 million prize money, has played her part in Heathcote's spring success in Melbourne.

Solzhenitsyn was ridden by Rawiller to his second Toorak Handicap victory while grand sprinter Buffering claimed an overdue Group One win in the Manikato Stakes last Friday night.

Heathcote stopped short of saying Fire Up Fifi could turn the tables on Red Tracer but says she will be competitive.

"It's a high quality field that befits the status of a Group One with some of the best mares in Australia lining up," he said.

"I'm hopeful she can put her hand up and join an elite group."

Fire Up Fifi's regular partner Damian Browne will be aboard the mare in the Myer.
