Better Than Ready to miss Coolmore

Trainer Kelly Schweida has decided to spell Better Than Ready rather than send him into the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes as an "afterthought".

Better Than Ready broke the Randwick 1200m track record when he won the Brian Crowley Stakes October 20 providing Schweida with his first winner in Sydney.

The colt clocked 1:08.19 in the Crowley, eclipsing the previous mark set by Northern Meteor in the corresponding race in 2008.

Northern Meteor subsequently won the Coolmore after the Crowley, but Schweida said Better Than Ready would not attempt the same double on Saturday.

"I discussed it with the owners and we thought about it long and hard but in the end we've decided to put him in the paddock," Schweida said.

"If we went to the Coolmore it would've been as an afterthought and if you're going to take on those Group One horses you'd want to have a better plan than that."

Schweida will weigh up options for Better Than Ready which might include a brief summer campaign in Brisbane in December ahead of a return trip to Sydney in the autumn.

"He'll have a couple of weeks off in the paddock then a week or so on the water walker which will give us time to make up our minds," he said.

"There are a couple of set weight races for three-year-olds here during the summer like the Gold Edition Plate and the Vo Rogue Plate that he could run in."

Autumn carnival plans for Better Than Ready are not set in stone but Schweida said the colt was unlikely to campaign in Melbourne.

"I've had a look at what's on offer for three-year-olds and there looks to be a few more options in Sydney compared to Melbourne," he said.
