Fawkner gets 1.5kg penalty for win

Monday 21 October 2013, 11:07am

Caulfield Cup winner Fawkner will carry 54.5kg in next month's Melbourne Cup after receiving a 1.5kg penalty for his victory on Saturday.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter said the penalty was at the lighter end of expectations but reflected Fawkner's dominant win and his relative inexperience in longer races.

"Fawkner was strong on the line in the Caulfield Cup at his first run beyond 2040 metres. I see no reason why he wouldn't be very competitive in the Melbourne Cup," Carpenter said.

The penalty is the same as was given to 2010 Caulfield Cup winner Descarado, Master O'Reilly (2007) and Sky Heights (1999).
