Joseph O'Brien to be named Irish champion

Sunday 28 October 2012, 9:59am

Joseph O'Brien will be crowned Irish champion jockey for the first time when the Flat season ends next weekend.

Rival Pat Smullen signed off for the season with a treble at Leopardstown but will be riding at the Breeders' Cup meeting in America when the final meetings are run.

Smullen's three winners took him to 84 with O'Brien three wins ahead.

O'Brien was on duty for his father, Aidan, at Doncaster on Saturday where he guided Kingsbarns to victory in the Racing Post Trophy, the final English Group One of the season.

"Obviously it's great and I've been very lucky to be able to ride some very nice two-year-olds and maidens along the way," he said.

"I get to ride some very nice horses and I'd like to thank Mr and Mrs Smith, Mr and Mrs Tabor and Mr and Mrs Magnier and my dad for the opportunity."
