Alpha Miss stays unbeaten in Randwick win

Saturday 19 October 2013, 1:51pm

Alpha Miss is only two starts into her racing career but she is already a bargain buy.

A $6,000 purchase, the filly has returned her owners more than $100,000 in prize money after adding Saturday's Victory Vein Plate (1000m) to her Gimcrack Stakes win.

Cheered on at Randwick by her large and boisterous syndicate of owners, the $2 favourite shared the lead then shook off her fellow on-pace runners before kicking away with a decisive lead.

Scratch Me Lucky ($21) charged late to get within a half neck of the winner with Pink Perfection ($16) another 1-3/4 lengths away third.

Trainer Gary Nickson said many of the filly's owners had raced horses before without success and were enjoying the ride.

"A lot of them in this horse have been in horses with me but have never had any luck," Nickson said.

"So they jumped into this one and they're going to have a ball I think."

Alpha Miss won't race again this spring.

Nickson plans to spell her and she will return for the early two-year-old races in the autumn.

"We had her wound up for the Gimcrack and it was a big thing to back up and come here again to the races," Nickson said.

"But she has done a good job here today so now she can go to the paddock and we'll probably concentrate on February and the Widden Stakes."

Winning jockey Jason Collett said Alpha Miss had to work hard for the win from barrier to post.

"I think it's a good idea to go to the paddock now. She definitely lightened off after that last run but to her credit it was a good win," he said.
