Perry sweet on Kokomo in Randwick juvenile

Paul Perry made a difficult situation work to his advantage on Epsom Handicap day and he might be rewarded for it this weekend.

Juvenile filly Kokomo was an emergency for last Saturday's Gimcrack Stakes but Perry quickly realised he wasn't going to know if she had gained a start before she was due to board the float from Newcastle to Sydney.

"She had to leave that early for the first race that we weren't going to know in time if she had got a run," Perry said.

"So she went down anyway for a day out.

"She had a walk around. It was like a normal race day only she didn't race."

That experience could be crucial on Saturday when Kokomo makes her belated debut in the Sharp Plate (1000m) against a field of 13 first starters.

Kokomo finished third to Lucky Raquie at her only barrier trial, making late ground in the 850m heat which was run in 49.88 seconds and among the fastest of the session.

"It was a good trial. She hit the line really well," Perry said.

"She's done everything I've asked of her and she has always been a likeable filly."

While Kokomo settled back in her trial, Perry expects her to take up a more forward position from her inside draw on Saturday.

"She shouldn't be too far off the speed and from there she should get a nice run just off them," he said.

Also set to make her debut in Saturday's race is the Clarry Conners-trained Lamplighter, a daughter of his Group One placegetter Glowlamp.

Conners can see similarities between mother and daughter.

"She's a fair bit like her. This might be a bit short for her, 1000 metres, but she will be getting home nice," Conners said.

"She's got a heap of ability."
