Gloaming looms as Fuerza crossroads race

Thursday 26 September 2013, 4:46pm

Fuerza is becoming a cryptic crossword puzzle for punters and trainer Bjorn Baker admits he too is having trouble figuring the horse out.

He is hoping Saturday's Gloaming Stakes at Rosehill goes some way towards resolving the conundrum.

Fuerza was runner-up to Guelph in the Group One Champagne Stakes and black-type placed twice more as a juvenile.

Despite his obvious talent, he took 10 attempts to break his maiden which he did at his third start this preparation.

But a subsequent failure in Newcastle's Group Three Spring Stakes in which he led and compounded to finish last has sent Baker back to the drawing board.

"We will probably ride him a bit colder. It's fair to say he's been a bit hit-and-miss but he's got ability on his day," Baker said.

"He seems to have come through his last run well, even though he was disappointing.

"He is still a colt and he may need to be gelded at some stage."

Fuerza's Group One placing came over 1600 metres and he steps up to 1800 metres on Saturday.

His sire Snippetson was a sprinter while his dam failed to win a race over any distance in six attempts.

While there is an argument he might have inherited some stamina from his mother, a daughter of Nothin' Leica Dane, Baker remains in two minds about Fuerza's ideal distance reach.

"I'm not convinced about any distance," he said.

"But his best form has been over a mile so I would say 1800 metres at Rosehill would still be within his range."
