Wordplay heads south to avoid Guelph clash

Tuesday 24 September 2013, 5:13pm

Darley star Guelph has at least one opposition stable running scared before the Flight Stakes.

In a concession Guelph might be a class above Sydney's three-year-old fillies, Randwick trainer Anthony Cummings will send Wordplay to Melbourne on Wednesday night.

Guelph looked in formidable touch with her Tea Rose Stakes victory on Saturday and Cummings thinks it will be pointless Wordplay taking on the two-time Group One winner at set weights in the Flight Stakes at Randwick.

Wordplay ran well against the colts and geldings when runner-up to Savvy Nature in the Spring Stakes at Newcastle last week.

It was her first stakes test and her second will come in the Edward Manifold Stakes at Flemington on October 5, the same day as the Flight Stakes.

Damien Oliver will ride the half-sister to the Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar at Flemington as she heads towards the Victorian Oaks.

"She certainly gives us every indication that just like her brother she will relish a step up to the longer distances," Cummings said on his website.

Guelph earned nominal favouritism for the Flight Stakes at Randwick when she overpowered her Tea Rose rivals.

Cummings's Melbourne spring presence will be lifted at Moonee Valley on Friday night when he runs Cluster in the Group Two Stutt Stakes.
