No excuses for Jewel's first defeat: Rodd

Saturday 21 September 2013, 6:41pm

Atlantic Jewel's jockey Michael Rodd says the glamour mare was beaten fair and square in the Underwood Stakes but is confident of a better outcome in the Cox Plate.

Atlantic Jewel's winning streak ended in her 10th start in the Underwood Stakes when It's A Dundeel wore her down in a thrilling finish to the weight-for-age clash at Caulfield.

Rodd took up the running on Atlantic Jewel and It's A Dundeel's rider James McDonald made the decision to camp outside the favourite and keep her within striking distance.

"She has been beaten by a very good horse, I think everyone has seen what he's capable of," Rodd said.

"It was just a beautiful ride by James to sum it up and come and sit up outside me.

"You could notice it was going to be a sprint home and he had the stamina in the end."

Rodd said he enjoyed a lovely run in front and wasn't going to make any excuse for the loss.

But he's keen for a rematch.

"Obviously she's going to probably be better ridden stalking the speed which we'll get in the Cox Plate, you get a good tempo, and that's what we're looking forward to," Rodd said.

"We can go and dissect it later on in hindsight and everything, but there's no excuses from our camp."

McDonald said he went in quietly confident of inflicting Atlantic Jewel's first defeat and that belief only got stronger when he moved up to apply the pressure turning for home.

"We had crawled and it was just going to be a match race," he said.
