Gai Waterhouse has again landed in hot water with stewards after the late scratching of Rockabill from the Spring Stakes at Newcastle.

Stewards said they had information that Rockabill had been lame on Tuesday but the matter had not been reported.

Deputy chairman of stewards Greg Rudolph, who officiated at Newcastle on Wednesday, said he had spoken to Waterhouse and asked her to be available for an inquiry into the circumstances that led to the scratching of Rockabill from the Spring Stakes.

He said Racing NSW's chief vet Craig Suann had inspected the horse on race morning and it was subsequently withdrawn due to lameness issues.

Suann had been sent to the Waterhouse stable to inspect Rockabill after stewards received information that the horse had been lame.

"I spoke to Mrs Waterhouse after the Cameron Handicap and we are trying to establish a date for her vet, Leanne Begg, and Craig Suann (to attend)," Rudolph said.

Waterhouse arrived at Broadmeadow just before Spurtonic finished fourth in the Cameron Handicap and she left the course immediately following a discussion with stewards.

In May, Waterhouse became embroiled in a long-running inquiry into More Joyous and was later fined $5000 for failing to report the condition of the mare prior to the All Aged Stakes.

She was also fined $2000 for a similar scenario leading into the Queen Of The Turf Stakes.

Last Friday, Suann inspected an old healing wound on the offside gaskin of the Waterhouse-trained Aussies Love Sport prior to the Golden Rose.

Suann reported that Aussies Love Sport was fit but stewards acceded to a subsequent request from the colt's connections that the horse be scratched.
