Sydney colt Kuroshio shrugged off a last-start failure with an all-the-way win in the Group Two McEwen Stakes at Moonee Valley on Saturday.

Kuroshio ($16) made his intentions known early when he crossed to lead from a wide gate.

Burning off challenges, Kuroshio defeated the Peter Moody-trained favourite Moment of Change ($2.45) by 1-3/4 lengths with General Truce ($9) third, another three quarter of a lengths away third.

Assistant trainer Paul Snowden said the three-year-old's last place at Rosehill on August 17 came down to trouble at the barrier and described it as a "forget" run.

"He's a quick horse and if was ever going to beat a horse the quality of Moment Of Change it was going to be today," said Snowden.

"We were bullish about his chances - it was a total forget run last start when he was hampered in the gates."

He said Kuroshio jumped well and pinched a couple of lengths close to home to make the win look easy.

Snowden said it was a massive jump in class for Kuroshio running against an open class where previously he had run against horses his own age.

"We will reassess things and see where we can go now but 1000 to 1100 metres is definitely his forte," he said.
