Campbell looking to press on with Cauthen

Monday 9 September 2013, 1:55pm

New Zealand trainer Andrew Campbell will continue with the Caulfield Guineas campaign of Cauthen as long as the colt gets the all clear after a veterinary examination on Tuesday.

Cauthen failed in Saturday's Listed Henry Bucks Stakes (1400m), finishing 12th as favourite. He was subsequently being found to be suffering from a case of the thumps.

Campbell said Cauthen was "bright and well" on Monday.

"He's come through it really well. It's a mystery. He seems to have taken no ill effects from it. He's eaten up and he worked this morning.

"I've got a vet coming out tomorrow to give him the once over.

"If he gets the all clear and everything else is all good we'll carry on to the Guineas.

"It all really depends on the horse and the report from the vet."

All going well, Cauthen's next start will be the Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 29.

Campbell said he didn't know a lot about the thumps but had done a lot of reading since Saturday.

"I got told today that sixty five per cent come out and win their next start," he said.

"Hopefully he can make it sixty six per cent."

One of the common descriptions of thumps is a diaphragmatic spasm causing laboured breathing.

Cauthen drifted from $6 second favourite for the Caulfield Guineas to $18 after Saturday's defeat.
