Hasan aiming for big Cups with Shoreham

Saturday 7 September 2013, 3:20pm

Flemington trainer Saab Hasan is dreaming of having a Cups runner after stable star Shoreham scored a narrow first-up win on his home track on Saturday.

Hasan only has a small team in work and was confident about the chances of Shoreham, who resumed in the Listed Sofitel Stakes (1400m) in his first start since placing in the South Australian Derby in May.

The trainer said he was aiming at qualifying the gelding for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

"We've got to try to get around the back door, so to speak," Hasan said.

"We've got a couple of sets of plans.

"Don't underestimate him. He's a little bit better than people think."

Shoreham has won three of his 12 races with all his victories coming at Flemington.

The four-year-old, who started $18, kept finding the line in the straight and grabbed the favourite Dany The Fox ($2.80) on the line to win by a half head with three-quarters of a length to Garud ($13) third.

The victory brought up a double for jockey Chris Symons who also won on Miracle To Me.

"He'll be better over more ground. He's an exciting horse I reckon," Symons said of Shoreham.
