Race at Mildura run over wrong distance

Sunday 1 September 2013, 5:57pm

An embarrassing mistake which resulted in a 1000m race at Mildura being run over 1100m has overshadowed Cup day in the north western Victorian town.

Stewards have opened an inquiry into the running of Sunday's 0-58 rating race won $7.50 chance Father Tony who beat $2.10 favourite Cannes Destination.

No-one noticed the distance error until after correct weight had been given and the judge queried the time of the race.

The Mildura Cup (1400m) was the final race on the program and was won in barnstorming fashion by Out Of Coober.

Prolific Victorian country jockey Dean Yendall brought the four-year-old out of the pack to nab victory in the final strides and get his first winner for the two-day meeting.

"He began really nicely, but from the awkward gate I elected to go back worse than midfield and get a bit of cover," Yendall told TVN.

"The horse was really strong the last 400 (metres).
