Rocket To Glory breaks through for Gollan

Saturday 31 August 2013, 2:00pm

Former country galloper Rocket To Glory is set to dominate Brisbane's early season sprint races after a display of sustained speed at Doomben on Saturday.

Rocket To Glory, favourite at $3.20, had no trouble crossing the field from the outside alley and leading to beat Buckmoore ($6.50) in the Makers Mark Handicap (1020m).

It was Rocket To Glory's first win since scoring in Mackay last October for his former trainer John Manzelmann.

New trainer Tony Gollan was the first to admit that it had taken him a good period of time to learn how to train Rocket To Glory.

"We got him last spring and I was away in Melbourne," Gollan said.

"I wasn't here to get an early handle on him but I have learned a few things about him since then."

Gollan said Rocket To Glory had run an unlucky third in the Magic Millions Sprint in January and he had mapped out a long-term plan for the gelding.

"I told connections to miss the winter with him and concentrate on the early summer races," he said.

"This time of year suits him really well and he will have these open company shorter races at his mercy."
