Boss to ride Rebel Dane at Warwick Farm

Glen Boss has already locked in the ride on the country's most exciting stayer and is looking to Rebel Dane to give him a sprint star for the spring.

Boss rode Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune to an easy win in Saturday's P B Lawrence Stakes with the Darren Weir-trained entire now also favourite for the Cox Plate.

The premier Melbourne jockey heads back to his old stomping ground in Sydney on Saturday to ride Rebel Dane in the Show County Quality (1200m) at Warwick Farm and will also partner Streama in the Warwick Stakes (1400m).

Boss rode Rebel Dane to a barrier trial win late last month and was excited by his prospects, saying he gave him the feeling he was a genuine Group One contender.

Trainer Gary Portelli took the four-year-old to Rosehill on Saturday where he had a between-race solo gallop with Hugh Bowman aboard.

"I wanted to take him to the races and give him a day out and a nice gallop with no pressure on him," Portelli said.

"He has only had one trial and I just wanted to open him up a bit."

Rebel Dane won the Royal Sovereign Stakes in February and ran Pierro to a head in the Hobartville Stakes but came up short in his Group One assignments in the Randwick Guineas and George Ryder Stakes.

Portelli said he thought he had been too rigid in sticking to the program mapped out and this time around would do things differently.

"He is a lightly-framed horse and although he put on weight during his spell, it's hard to keep it on him," he said.

"Last time we had a plan and we stuck to it but this time we will let him tell us where he should go.

"He is more likely to be kept to the shorter distances."
