French mare to make Australian debut

Tuesday 13 August 2013, 4:03pm

Last-start Longchamp winner You Are My World will make her Australian debut in a somewhat less grand setting at Warwick Farm on Wednesday but if trainer Tony McEvoy is right, she will make it to the big stage.

Like many Australians, McEvoy is embracing the European staying bloodlines but unlike many, he is keen to race mares.

You Are My World, who has a win and a second from two starts in France last October, runs in a 1400m fillies and mares race at Warwick Farm with James McDonald to ride.

"I wanted to buy fillies in Europe and I want to buy some more," McEvoy said.

"You Are My World is a lovely little mare and has improved physically since she has been here," McEvoy said.

"She had two barrier trials in Adelaide and has been at Hawkesbury for three weeks.

"She has settled in really well. I put her in the Caulfield Cup because you have to enter these races so early but realistically it will probably be too soon for her this year.

"I think she will start to peak in the autumn but this is a lovely race to kick her off in.

"I had her entered for Newcastle last week but she got 59 kilograms and a wide draw.

"She's not drawn much better tomorrow but she doesn't have as much weight and I would expect to see her running on."

There has been one scratching from the race and You Are My World will come in from barrier 11 if the emergencies don't run.

McEvoy, who opened his Hawkesbury complex earlier this year to complement his Adelaide operation, has lost another of his imports, Summer Cup winner Le Roi, for the spring.

"He was unfortunately injured in the same race Fiveandahalfstar broke down in so he is out," he said.

Victoria Derby winner Fiveandahalfstar was injured during his BMW win and will also miss the spring.

Trainer Anthony Cummings issued an update on Tuesday saying the gelding's vet tests were clear but he would continue his rehabilitation on the water walker with a view to returning in the autumn.
