Batters trains first metropolitan winner

Saturday 11 July 2020, 6:27pm

Trainer Damian Batters' faith in Leroytheconquerer was repaid when the gelding gave him his first Saturday metropolitan winner.

Leroytheconquerer ($7) finished too well to win the XXXX Dry Handicap (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast.

Batters trains a small team at Caloundra and has had plenty of success at midweek and provincial meetings.

The win gave Batters winners with his past three runners because he had a double with Gideons and Wantock at the previous Sunshine Coast meeting.

He has had his trainers' licence for six years but has alternated his career between Queensland and South Australia.

Batters believed Leroytheconquerer was a possible stakes horse last season as a three-year-old but the grey has taken time to reach his best.

"He deserved that win and hopefully it will be the start of more wins for me at city meetings," he said.
