Melbourne Cup hopefuls head barrier trials

Thursday 1 August 2013, 4:46pm

The spring carnival build-up will continue on Friday when a host of stars step out in barrier trials at Randwick.

Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente will be joined by stablemates Carlton House, Glencadam Gold and Michelangelo in the opening heat in which Gai Waterhouse has seven of the eight entries.

Coolmore Classic winner Appearance is down to trial over 800m for Guy Walter against the likes of comeback galloper Metal Bender, emerging stayer Tremec and exciting colt Drago.

The new training partnership of Bart and James Cummings will send around two of their biggest stars in top mare Norzita and progressive three-year-old Eurozone.

Norzita's Sydney goal will be the George Main Stakes at Randwick on September 21 while Golden Rose aspirant Eurozone will have at least one lead-up run ahead of his Group One target.

That pair will clash with Rain Affair who will be among the first of the big-name gallopers to make their new-season racetrack return in Saturday week's Group Three Missile Stakes at Randwick.

Pride has reason to be confident Rain Affair can finally win a Group One this season and also expressed high hopes for stablemate Tiger Tees.

"Those two are knocking on the door and with the retirement of so many of our good sprinters, I can see one or both of them winning a big race," Pride said.
