Panel seeks horse welfare solutions

Thursday 4 June 2020, 12:05am

A thoroughbred industry panel has called for submissions on how to improve the welfare of horses leaving the racing and breeding industries.

Chaired by former Victorian premier Denis Napthine, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Welfare Working Group (TAWWG), will build submissions into report due to be released later this year.

The TAWWG also intends to meet with industry stakeholders and animal welfare groups over the coming months.

"This project can only be successful if there is strong engagement from anyone who has valuable insights to share, so we would encourage as many people as possible to come forward and have their say," Napthine said.

"Thoroughbreds are central to an industry that provides 72,000 full-time jobs and generates more than $9 billion each year in direct and indirect benefits to Australia's economy, so the industry has a duty of care to look after them before, during and after their racing careers."

The panel formed by Thoroughbred Breeders Australia (TBA) will also be seeking advice from an industry steering group featuring leading trainer Chris Waller, Victoria Racing Club board member Neil Werrett and Godolphin Australia's managing director Vin Cox.

Groups or individuals can read the issues paper available online at thoroughbredwelfareinitiative.org.au before making submissions.

Submissions close on July 24 and can be emailed to secretariat@thoroughbredwelfareinitiative.org.au or posted to TAWWG, PO Box 149, Canterbury, NSW 2193.
