Top trainer praises apprentice

Sunday 28 July 2013, 2:02pm

A long-range tip from premier trainer Peter Moody is always worth noting.

And his latest offering is no exception.

Moody notched his 200th win for the season with Alana's Dream in a maiden at Donald on Saturday, but the celebration was all about the 16-year-old who rode her.

For Regan Bayliss, who has been apprenticed to Moody for most of this year, the win came at his first race ride - and the praise it drew from his Boss was of Black Caviar standard.

"In 12 months time we will be standing here watching him ride a treble," said Moody who was at Caulfield leading in winner No. 201.

"Regan is a tremendous kid, he's got very good ability and he rode a very smart race," Moody said.

Bayliss began his apprenticeship with Mick Kent at Cranbourne, but a desire to be in the stable of Victoria's top trainer and a long-standing family connection brought him to Moody.

Bayliss still goes to school three days a week and spends the other four living and breathing racing.

"When I come into the office on Monday morning he's downloaded the videos of every race in Australia for the weekend," Moody said.

"He can tell you the result, its pedigree, its weight and what gate the winner drew of every race."

Bayliss' father was clerk of the course at Ipswich in Queensland for many years and the family were neighbours of Moody's when he was learning is trade.

Despite the boost Moody gave the teenager, the win didn't come with any privileges.

Bayliss was soon back at work mucking out boxes.
