Front-running way works for Get Stuck In

Saturday 21 March 2020, 4:57pm

A plan to pitch Get Stuck In into a new role as a leader paid off when the gelding won the Gallopers Sports Club Handicap at Eagle Farm.

Baylee Nothdurft, who is leading the metropolitan jockeys' title, scored his 53rd winner for the season and none have been easier.

Nothdurft was gifted the lead on Get Stuck In ($3.20) who bowled along at a walking pace before beating Shogun Sun ($8) by four lengths.

Winning trainer Tony Gollan said he had devised a plan with Nothdurft to lead unless anything else wanted to go hard.

"I saw they had put ear muffs on the only other possible leader in Prioritise. I thought he might miss the start wearing them for the first time and that is how it worked out," Gollan said.

"Since he went up in grade and down in weight Get Stuck In has been racing very well.

"That was his seventh win and he might go on to win a Listed race at 1600m in the winter."

Get Stuck In is one of several horses raced by Linda Huddy who are by the Melbourne Cup placegetter Lucas Cranach.

"Linda loves the breed. None of them are very big and Get Stuck In is about the size of a yearling. But they can all gallop."

Nothdurft said once he was able to lead easily he was always going to win.

Jim Byrne, who rode Shogun Sun, said the gelding had every chance after being third on the fence.

"The winner just sprinted too week for us," Byrne said.

Toowoomba gelding Papa Jo confirmed his rating as one of the fastest horses out of the barriers in Queensland when he led all the way to win the Tulloch House Handicap (1000m).

Papa Jo was bred by former Brisbane Racing Club and Queensland Turf Club deputy chairman Eddie Kann who sent his handy mare Nobody's Girl to underrated sire Drumbeats.
