Mr Quickie on target for All-Star Mile

Thursday 20 February 2020, 4:48pm

The plan to target Mr Quickie at the $5 million All-Star Mile without a lead-up race is on track after the four-year-old secured his spot in the field through the public vote.

Mr Quickie is one of six individual Group One winners among the top 10 vote getters revealed on Thursday.

Last year's Queensland Derby winner finished seventh in the poll and is scheduled to run in the 1600m-race at Caulfield on March 14 first-up from a spell.

The Phillip Stokes-trained Mr Quickie, who is $15 for the All-Star Mile, produced a slashing run over 1600m first-up last spring when third in the Group One Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington.

That encouraged his connections to target the All-Star Mile fresh and part-owner Wylie Dalziel said it there was both relief and excitement that the gelding had secured enough votes to make the field.

"We're targeting it first-up so we didn't want to have to rely on winning our way in," Dalziel said.

"We had to get in on votes so we actively went about doing all that and we were hoping it would be revealed today that we were there. And we are.

"Phillip Stokes is training him accordingly so if we didn't get in, he would have had to totally change plans.

"Now everything is going to plan."

Mr Quickie finished second in a Werribee barrier trial on Tuesday, the first of two planned trials leading into the All-Star Mile and Dalziel believes the gelding shapes as a genuine winning chance.

"I went and watched his trial at Werribee and it was perfect," Dalziel said.

"The owners decided to go with Damien Oliver for this run and thought he might suit the horse. He gave a good report after that trial.

"It's not easy to win a $5 million race but we think we've got a chance of doing it."
