Darci back on track after early setback

Thursday 18 July 2013, 4:42pm

There isn't much Bede Murray doesn't know about horses but Darci Be Good's recent setback had him confounded.

The Group One placegetter was being prepared for his latest campaign when Murray noticed he had an issue in his back legs.

The gelding was diagnosed with a bone disorder, an affliction Murray had not seen in his many years in racing.

And it was a problem that proved difficult to solve.

"It was a bone disorder in his back cannons. I'd never heard of it. Apparently it is reasonably common, but it's not common to me," Murray said.

"He didn't respond to a lot of the early treatment but we've struck one now and he has responded well.

"Things are looking a bit brighter so hopefully on Saturday he can run well."

Darci Be Good will kick off his campaign in the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill.

He hasn't had a barrier trial but he did work between races at a recent Kembla Grange meeting and is a first-up winner.

The gelding is returning from a handy summer campaign which included a win in the Group Three Hawkesbury Gold Cup and an unlucky placing in the Villiers Stakes.

The Hawkesbury feature is again his short-term goal following an announcement the race will be moved from November to August this year.

"He won it last year and if he comes through the campaign well he will go there again," Murray said.

Darci Be Good is a $17 chance for the Winter Stakes.

Under The Sun, one of three runners for Gai Waterhouse, is the $3.80 favourite ahead of rejuvenated sprinter Mic Mac at $4.60.
