Prettyfamous relishes back-up assignment

Saturday 13 July 2013, 3:41pm

For the first time in his 30-year career, trainer Mario Caltabiano broke with tradition and backed Prettyfamous up after a midweek victory, and it paid off at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

The filly won over 1100 metres at Canterbury on Wednesday and the Warwick Farm trainer sent her out for the Share Care Support Centre (1300m) not knowing what to expect.

"I've never backed a horse up like that before and I've been training for 30 years," Caltabiano said.

"I've always tried to take the horses along slowly but it was just a short walk across the road and she'd done so well since Canterbury I made the final decision last night she would run.

"She really surprised me how well she won."

Prettyfamous ($5.50) and Ciao ($10) were battling for supremacy at the top of the straight but Prettyfamous responded to apprentice Lester Grace and stretched out to put four lengths on her rival.

Caltabiano keeps a stable of around six horses at Warwick Farm, which is as many as he wants.

"I'm happy just going along with the horses I've got," he said.

"This filly has done really well and it's a thrill for me and her owners.

"We'll just keep going along with her and find the right races."

It was the fourth win from 11 starts for Prettyfamous who has now won more than double her $55,000 purchase price from the 2011 New Zealand Select Sale.

Caltabiano will be back to the hard slog on Sunday when he takes maiden galloper Whitney's Girl to Mudgee to try to coax a win from the filly who has failed to register a placing in five starts so far.
