Gem Of Scotland to spell on winning note

Saturday 12 October 2019, 4:49pm

Star Toowoomba three-year-old Gem Of Scotland is heading for a spell despite scoring another impressive win in the Cutters Skips Handicap (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

Gem Of Scotland ($2.05) cruised to the lead at the 300m and went on to beat Ballistic Boy ($2.60) by 3 /4 length with The Sinner ($11) 1-1/4 lengths back in third.

She confirmed her rating as the best three-year-old filly in Queensland as she had to carry 59kg and gave a top-class field of local three-year-olds plenty of weight.

However, trainer Rex Lipp was adamant Gem Of Scotland would go for a spell next week despite being in top form.

"I was going to spell Gem Of Scotland last week after she ran second. But really she only got out in the final 200m (in that race) and she went home and ate up well," Lipp said.

"I thought the 1400m this week would be ideal so I gave her one more run."

Lipp said Gem Of Scotland would probably have one or two runs in the summer with a possible attempt to get a wild card into the Magic Millions Guineas in January.

"But you know something, I am not that worried about the Magic Millions. I really think she is a winter carnival horse so I want her to be ready for it," Lipp said.

"I won't be knocking her around to get a Magic Millions start. But I would like to get some black type wins for her."

Lipp said Gem Of Scotland should have been unbeaten in all three of her runs this campaign.

"As I said she didn't have much luck last time but she has won today and it is onwards from here," Lipp said.

Gem Of Scotland has now won six of her nine starts and more than $400,000 in prize money.
