O'Dea doubles his chances at Eagle Farm

Thursday 29 August 2019, 1:49pm

In-form trainer Steve O'Dea has doubled his chances of continuing his success for the Proven Thoroughbreds syndicate by splitting Reckless Choice and So Spirited at Eagle Farm.

O'Dea accepted with both in Saturday's Ariat Country Music Open Handicap (1400m) and the Class Six (1400m).

After studying the fields, O'Dea left So Spirited in the Open handicap while Reckless Choice will run in the Class Six.

So Spirited and Reckless Choice are both raced by Jamie Walter's Proven Thoroughbreds, a mainstay of O'Dea's stable for a decade.

O'Dea does not keep records of individual wins but he would have won at least 50 races for the syndicate.

Proven Thoroughbreds have raced some of O'Dea's best horses including Sir Moments, Go Cart, Candika and Sesar.

O'Dea has no worries about So Spirited going from winning a midweek Class Five at Ipswich to open company at Eagle Farm.

"We thought he was a real chance in an open a couple of weeks ago but in the end we opted for the Ipswich win to give him a confidence booster," O'Dea said.

O'Dea said Reckless Choice was overdue for a change of luck and would appreciate a drop in weight.

Both horses will be ridden by apprentice Stephanie Thornton who has moved to Brisbane from Victoria.

She has ridden three winners in the past fortnight for O'Dea.
