Begood Toya Mother makes it five in a row

Saturday 1 June 2019, 4:48pm

Begood Toya Mother is off to the paddock to prepare for a spring campaign after maintaining a perfect preparation with an all-the-way win at Caulfield.

The Warrnambool-trained galloper heads for a spell for three weeks after taking out the Ladbrokes Odds Boost Handicap on Saturday.

Sent off the $1.75 favourite under Declan Bates, Begood Toya Mother raced to a five length win from Elite Drake, backed from $10 to $6, with Arancini ($10) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

Trainer Daniel Bowman admitted to nerves as the gelding attempted a fifth straight victory.

"I knew the horse was in good order but when a lot of form analysts are trying to find ways to get him beaten, I was nervous," Bowman said.

"But I just backed myself in and we've got the job done."

After winning just once in his first five starts, Begood Toya Mother's winning streak culminated with Saturday's victory, a heat of the VRC-CRV Winter Championship.

But Bowman has bigger plans with the Group One Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield in September his target.

Ideally Bowman wants to get Begood Toya Mother's rating up to tackle that race and is planning two starts prior to the Sir Rupert Clarke.

"Early days he was hopeless and it wasn't until this prep when he started trialling that the penny dropped and he worked it all out," Bowman said.

"We'll try and target the Rupert Clarke, if he's good enough great, if he's not there's plenty of good races at a level below that."
