Ipswich Cup day tickets in pre-sales boom

Wednesday 29 May 2019, 12:36pm

The Ipswich Turf Club has already pre-sold 10,000 tickets for its Cup day meeting next month and has put in place contingency plans to overcome problems created by reconstruction work.

The refurbishment of the main grandstand has been disrupted by the discovery of asbestos which has set work back by months.

It has led to rumours the Cup, on June 15, would be relocated but ITC Chairman Wayne Patch said there was no way that would happen.

"We have already had 10,000 in pre sales. I am hopeful we will get up to 20,000 people on Cup day," he said.

"We have already started putting up the marquees and while the stand work won't be complete we have contingency plans to accommodate everyone.

"Ipswich people always rally around when things are a bit tough and the Cup is the heart and soul of the city.

"We are very confident everything will go off very well both on and off the track on Cup day."

The false rail has been out 10m for the past two Ipswich meetings but will be in the A position on Cup day.

"I have walked the track a couple of times and it is in great order," Patch said.

Meanwhile, the ITC will meet with Racing Queensland to discuss an issue with the club's raceday stalls.

"We really appreciate RQ funding the refurbishment of the stand but what we really wanted was the relocation of the stalls which are well and truly past their use-by dates," Patch said.

"Now they have run out of money but we still think the stalls should be a priority after 50 odd years of service."
