Maddison Avenue aiming for three straight

Thursday 9 May 2019, 4:48pm

Sydney visitor Maddison Avenue will have her first try beyond 1600 metres when she strives to extend her winning sequence to three at Caulfield.

Maddison Avenue snuck under the radar of some punters when successful at Sandown on April 10 before returning to Sydney to win at Randwick on April 25 when well supported.

She returns to Melbourne on Saturday to contest the JRA Handicap in which she will be partnered by 2kg claiming apprentice Michael Poy.

Warwick Farm trainer Marc Conners said the 1800m of Saturday's race was a good opportunity to test the mare following her last two victories at 1600m.

"We've never gone past a mile with her before so we thought it was a good chance to try her while she's in good form," Conners said.

"It's a mares race and it looks the right type of race for her."

Maddison Avenue has proven a hardy mare through a campaign that began in December and has extended to nine runs.

The mare has surprised Conners while at the same time she has been entered for the Gold Coast Broodmare Sale at the end of the month.

"She's done terribly well since her last win and I'm surprised by how well she does as she keeps backing up all the time," Conners said.

"She's in the broodmare sale so it's a case of seeing what we've got, do we sell or keep going for another year.

"She's won a Saturday race in Sydney at Randwick but if we could win another one down here it would be good.

"There's such good prize money about to consider keep racing on."

In an open betting race, Maddison Avenue has eased from $13 to $17 since markets opened on Wednesday.

With the scratching of Janes Angel, first emergency Thoughtful Harmony gains a start and has been supported from $13 into $8 as she strives for a fifth win in succession.
