Retired stallion sires promising winner

Wednesday 10 April 2019, 3:34pm

Owner-breeder Neville Bell admits he may have been too quick to retire the stallion Champions Gallery after the win of Kalik at Ipswich.

The Tony Haydon-trained Kalik ($15) burst away in the straight to win the Sky Racing Plate by 4-1/4 lengths.

The gelding is one of only a few horses racing by Champions Gallery who stood at Bell's Kilto Park complex at Caboolture, north of Brisbane.

Bell had hoped to breed a Melbourne Cup winner from Champions Gallery who won in England before racing in Hong Kong where he was placed in the 2007 Derby.

Champions Gallery had only limited success as a commercial sire and like Kalik many of his offspring were raced by Bell who is also Brisbane Racing Club chairman.

"He only ever had limited books of mares here but got more than a dozen individual winners," Bell said.

"But I retired him up to Lyndhurst Stud where he apparently serves some of the non-thoroughbred mares"

"After Kalik's win I might have been a bit hasty. Still I have just had a week's R and R before the winter carnival so the win will cover some costs."

Haydon, who has a small team at Caloundra, has high hopes Kalik will develop into a city horse over more ground.
