Family flavour to Berry victory

Wednesday 12 June 2013, 3:00pm

Kevin Berry is better known in racing as the father of leading jockeys Tommy and Nathan but he earned some recognition in his own right at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

Berry found himself in the city winner's circle as a trainer when Il Mio Destino, a new addition to his stable, held on to win the Australian Turf Club Handicap (1300m).

He couldn't remember the last city winner he trained but the victory has coincided with a mini explosion in the horse population in his Warwick Farm yard.

Il Mio Destino was transferred to Berry's care when Con Karakatsanis started a nine-month disqualification over his involvement in a raceday tubing scandal during the Melbourne spring carnival.

Berry has taken over the training of six horses from the Karakatsanis string.

A $6 chance, Il Mio Destino only had a nose to spare over Red Hot Dane ($5) with the leader Fairyland ($10) finishing three quarters of a length away third.

Family teamwork was instrumental in the filly breaking through at her fourth start.

It was Nathan who recommended his father employ a gear change on Il Mio Destino and he had further input with his positive riding tactics making the difference between winning and losing.

"The winkers sharpened her up but fitness got her home because she didn't handle the (rain-affected) track," Nathan said.

Nathan Berry has ridden 26 Sydney metropolitan winners this season while his brother rode 55 winners before taking up a short-term Hong Kong contract at the end of the autumn carnival.

Tommy rode a Group One winner at his first Hong Kong meeting but he will return to Sydney at the end of his three-month term.
