Patches uses home racetrack to advantage

Wednesday 27 March 2019, 5:15pm

Two-year-old Patches again showed the advantage young Toowoomba-trained horses have on their home track with an upset win on Wednesday.

Patches ($16) made light of continuing rain and the tricky uphill Toowoomba track to hold off another locally trained horse in Adamdeant ($6.50).

Trainer Michael Nolan paid $15,000 for Patches at the Capricornia sales in Rockhampton last year.

Patches, who is by former flying sprinter Whittington, will now head to Rockhampton for the Capricornia Sales 2YO Classic on April 13.

The Toowoomba meeting was a metropolitan standard meaning Patches picked up $14,000 in prize money and $8500 in bonus payments.

"That should enough to get him into the Rockhampton race so that is where will head," Nolan said.

"He had some good jump-outs before his first start at the Gold Coast but nothing went right for him as after getting bumped at the start he had to go back.

"Today he was able to to the lead and he handled the wet track well."

The favourite Got No Doubt ($2.40) was struggling from just after the start to finish eighth but jockey Brad Stewart reported she had been hit in the blinkers by a flying clod of grass.

Premier jockey Jeff Lloyd made a rare visit to Toowoomba for two rides and came away a winner on both.

He scored on promising mare Namib ($2.70) who made it two wins from three starts for Toowoomba trainer Ben Currie.

Namib was originally trained by Barry Lockwood but was retired after suffering injury problems last year.

"She didn't get into foal so they sent her to me. She can win better races," Currie said.
