Goldmarket's long run at track to continue

Sunday 17 March 2019, 11:59am

The decision to retain the washed-out Listed Goldmarket at the Gold Coast means it will maintain its long running association with the track.

A 20-minute downpour meant stewards were forced to abandon the Gold Coast meeting after the running of the $500,000 Aquis 2YO Jewel on Saturday.

The track was already a heavy nine before the rain in the lead-up to the Jewel which was the seventh of 10 races on the program.

The Jewel, won by favourite The Odyssey, was run under clearing skies but chief steward Ian Brown said the damage had already been done.

"The jockeys were worried about visibility and the late rain made it too hard to risk continuing," Brown said.

The $200,000 Aquis 3YO Jewel will be run at Eagle Farm next Saturday while the Listed Goldmarket will be run at the Gold Coast as the last race the same day.

It means the Goldmarket will continue as the longest running feature race run solely at the Gold Coast.

It was first held in 1963 and has been a major part of racing at the track since.

"We were naturally keen to retain it as a showpiece race for the club," Gold Coast Turf Club chief executive Steve Lines said.
