Busy times ahead for Waller and Colless

Sunday 3 March 2019, 4:11pm

Top trainer Chris Waller's Gold Coast stable is preparing for a winter influx of horses as one of its key workers hopes to reach a milestone this week.

Jockey Glen Colless who rides track work for Waller and also helps at the stables, is set to reach 2000 career wins in Australia.

He is currently on 1999 winners.

Colless has also ridden winners in Asia but he is a Group One winner in Australia.

"I have been riding track work for Chris for some time but since I returned from a back injury I have been doing more around the stables with the horses," Colless said.

He said at this stage he was content to ride at the Gold Coast on Saturdays with the occasional trip to Brisbane.

Waller's Queensland manager Paul Shailer said Colless was a key part of the stable's success.

"To have Glen able to report on the horses is a great help. It would be a real achievement if he can reach 2000 wins on home soil," Shailer said.

Waller is firmly entrenched in the top five trainers on the Queensland metropolitan premiership with 26 winners this season.

"We have 27 horses in the stable at the moment but Chris will build up numbers for the winter. We have a capacity for 42," Shailer said.

Fellow Sydney trainer Greg Hickman's Queensland satellite stable got off to a great start with it first winner on Saturday.

All Summer Long scored an easy win at the Gold Coast for jockey Ryan Plumb.

Hickman has 10 boxes at the Gold Coast with a chance to expand.
