Lockwood examines options for Tokamak

Saturday 8 June 2013, 12:54pm

Trainer Barry Lockwood no longer regards Tokamak as a horse with a crazy streak.

Maintaining his consistent winter carnival form, Tokamak ($10) won Saturday's Strawberry Road Handicap (1600m) at Eagle Farm by a long neck from Someday ($4.40) with Transporter ($3.40) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

But Lockwood admits his first opinion of Tokamak wasn't flattering during the horse's debut campaign.

"He was a complete lunatic," Lockwood said.

"He'd run straight over the top of you and had no manners at all."

Eventually Tokamak responded to Lockwood's methods.

"I thought I'm too old to fight you so I left him alone for three months and when I had another look at him he had settled down a lot," he said.

"Nowadays he'd be the quietest horse in the stable and his form this year has been really good."

Several options are on the table for Tokamak for the remainder of his campaign, according to Lockwood.

"I could back him up in the Ipswich Cup next week but more than likely I'll wait a fortnight and run him here in the Tatt's Mile," he said.

Jockey Paul Hammersley has been impressed with Tokamak's transformation this campaign.

"He keeps taking the next step and the way he won today you wouldn't say he couldn't handle a bit more ground," he said.
