Lemaire could ride Shahwardi in Cup

Wednesday 17 October 2012, 9:52am

Christophe Lemaire could get the chance to win a second Melbourne Cup with trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre naming him as the possible pilot for Herbert Power Stakes winner Shahwardi.

Stablemate Americain will be ridden by Gerald Mosse who also partners the 2010 winner in Saturday's Caulfield Cup.

Lemaire was a late replacement for the suspended Craig Williams on on the Mikael Delzangles-trained Dunaden in 2011 when he became the second French horse to win the Melbourne Cup.

Shahwardi was ridden to his impressive Group Two win last weekend by Kerrin McEvoy who has committed himself to Godolphin's Lost In The Moment in the Melbourne Cup.

"He (Shahwardi) looks in very good form and has a good weight for Melbourne," de Royer Dupre said.

"Gerald Mosse cannot make the weight for Shahwardi.

"Mosse will ride Americain anyway and we will see about Shahwardi.

"Possibly it will be (Christophe) Lemaire."

Americain was fourth in the Melbourne Cup last year and after a period with David Hayes, he was returned to de Royer-Dupre.

"Americain looks well, but he arrived very late in the yard and I did not have time to run him more than once, just in the Prix Kergorlay," de Royer-Dupre said.

"He is going to run on Saturday. He's well, but he will need the race.

"The principal option is to be ready for the Melbourne Cup."
