Tognetti a stayer on the rise

Monday 3 June 2013, 6:32pm

What Tognetti lacks in class against his proven opposition in Saturday's Stayers Cup can be offset by his trainer's belief in his potential.

Guy Walter says the step up to 3200 metres over the Sydney Cup course at Randwick will suit the four-year-old emerging stayer.

The quality handicap attracted 14 entries on Monday with Group Two winner Permit the highest rated on 97 compared to Tognetti's 66 but Walter is unfazed.

"The two miles seems to be what he is looking for," Walter said.

"He has been full of running at the end of his races and it was a good win last start."

Tognetti claimed his second 2600m victory last week at Gosford which hosted a metropolitan meeting.

Both his Gosford wins have been on wet tracks while his maiden victory over 1800 metres at Hawkesbury in August was on a good surface.

"He is very stoutly bred on his dam's side and is improving as he reaches maturity," Walter said.

"It's a step up but I think it will suit him."

Tognetti will be ridden by Jeff Penza who partnered him to his most recent win.

Moonee Valley Gold Cup winner Vatuvei has a 96 rating while last-start Andrew Ramsden Stakes winner Unchain My Heart (95) adds further quality to the nominations.

Trained by David Hayes, Unchain My Heart has won nine races, reinforcing her staying prowess over 3200 metres in the Andrew Ramsden at Flemington last time out.

Entries for the Stayers Cup have been extended until Tuesday morning.
