McLeod and Browne suspended at Eagle Farm

Saturday 1 June 2013, 6:08pm

Rhys McLeod was showered with praise for a brilliant tactical ride aboard Gondokoro in the Queensland Oaks but stewards weren't as impressed.

Stewards issued McLeod with an eight meetings suspension for causing interference aboard Gondokoro on the home turn to Soapy Star, Dear Demi and Ireland's Teardrop.

He was also hit with a $300 fine for celebrating the filly's win before the finishing line.

Pleading guilty to the charge, McLeod's suspension will start after next Saturday's Eagle Farm meeting which means he is clear to ride Gondokoro if she backs up in the Group One Queensland Derby.

Trainer Pat Carey said a decision on a Derby start would be left as late as possible.

"We've got until Wednesday to make the call which gives me time to talk it over with the owners and see where we head next," he said.

McLeod will resume riding on June 20.

Damian Browne also had mixed fortunes in the stewards' room.

Browne was successful in one battle when he retained the Eagle Farm Cup aboard Quintessential, surviving a protest from runner-up Manighar.

But Browne lost another one when he was suspended for careless riding on the mare.

He pleaded guilty and was outed for eight meetings which also begins after next Saturday's Stradbroke meeting at Eagle Farm, allowing him to ride Buffering in the Group One sprint.

Stewards found Browne allowed Quintessential to shift in passing the winning post the first time in the Eagle Farm Cup causing severe crowding to Manighar.

His suspension covers the Ipswich Cup meeting but he will return on June 20 and he can ride at the Tatt's Tiara meeting two days later.
