Blinkers back on Dear Demi in Qld Oaks

Thursday 30 May 2013, 4:42pm

Stewards have approved a late request from trainer Clarry Conners for Dear Demi to race in blinkers in Saturday's Group One Queensland Oaks.

Dear Demi's name wasn't among the gear changes when final acceptances were taken on Wednesday for the Oaks at Eagle Farm but Conners made a late application for the gear addition.

"She's been getting a long way back in her races and hopefully from gate three with the blinkers back on it might help her to race a bit closer," Conners said.

Dear Demi raced in blinkers when she won the VRC Oaks at Flemington last year and as the only Group One winner in the field has a rating of 105 which is 19 points higher than the next highest rated horse, Express Power.

Dear Demi will be having her third start in as many weeks but Conners says her build-up has been timed to deliver a peak run on Saturday.

"She thrives on racing and if I only ran her in The Roses she would've gone into this race with only one run under her belt in six weeks," he said.

Nash Rawiller will ride Dear Demi in the Oaks after Luke Nolen was needed for the Peter Moody-trained Miss Zenella.

Moody gave the go-ahead for Miss Zenella to run in the Oaks after her impressive win at Sale on May 12.

Dear Demi is trying to become only the second filly in the past 30 years to complete the VRC Oaks-Queensland Oaks double.

She is the $3.20 favourite with Gondokoro, a fast-finishing second in The Roses, rated her main danger at $4.20.

Gondokoro's trainer Pat Carey believes the step up to 2400 metres on the roomier Eagle Farm track gives the filly her best opportunity to turn the tables in the Oaks.

"No horse was finishing the race off better than she did at Doomben and she's done a treat since, he said.

"I'm just hoping the track isn't too wet for Saturday to give every horse their best chance."

While Gondokoro is paid up for the Group One Queensland Derby, Conners said Dear Demi would be spelled after the Oaks.
