Secret Admirer in Cup gear switch

Tuesday 16 October 2012, 1:46pm

The addition of a new piece of gear in trackwork has been given a raceday endorsement for Caulfield Cup mare Secret Admirer.

Working in winkers for the first time on Tuesday, Secret Admirer worked over 1000m and was asked to extend from the 600m of the gallop.

"The last furlong (200m) was her best furlong and even after the post she really went through the line well," jockey Brenton Avdulla said.

First used overseas, winkers, a device made of sheepskin which is attached to the cheek straps of a bridle, have become an increasingly popular gear switch with Australian trainers.

They help a horse focus while allowing more side vision than traditional blinkers.

"She has been declared to race in them," Begg told AAP.

Avdulla will be reunited with Secret Admirer in the Caulfield Cup after he was overlooked for the mare's early spring runs.

His feedback influenced Begg to work Secret Admirer in winkers as she prepares to race beyond a middle distance for the first time in the Caulfield Cup.

"We came to the conclusion we might try something different with her," Avdulla said.

"They might put that little bit of an edge on her we are looking for."

Secret Admirer ran the eye-catching race in the Epsom Handicap, winding up late to finish fifth in the Group One mile.

Her stamina hasn't been tested past acceptable finishes in last season's Cox Plate and Queen Elizabeth Stakes but Avdulla is confident she will stay.

"Every time I've ridden her she has always given me the feel she is a horse who would get two thousand metres-plus," he said.
