Back-to-back Caulfield wins for Polanski

Saturday 25 May 2013, 1:15pm

The $4500 yearling purchase Polanski ended his juvenile season in style at Caulfield on Saturday, confirming a $1.5 million Classic target in the spring.

The Robbie Laing-trained Polanski took his earnings to almost $120,000 from four starts as he fought off the challenge from Celeritas to claim his second city victory in The Golden Fleece & Court Jester Plate (1600m).

He will now be put aside to return in the spring with the Group One Victoria Derby (2500m) the aim.

"I suppose three weeks ago I would have sounded a dill," Laing said of the Derby aspirations.

"But he's now won over 1400 metres and won over a mile. If you ran a market on the Derby now Drago would be favourite and he would be second or third favourite, you would think."

Polanski, sent out $2.50 favourite at Caulfield, took up the running and bowled along as the horse considered to be his biggest danger, Eagle Island ($3), settled back in the field.

Laing wanted Polanski's jockey Dean Yendall to make it a test from the 600-metre mark and despite Celeritas ($9) moving up in the straight and looking a serious threat, Polanski fought on solidly to win by 1-1/4 lengths with Eagle Island another 1-1/2 lengths away third.

Laing said the colt's pre-race behaviour suggested he was ready for a spell and hopes he'll improve again after a six-week break.

"Horses that can run a mile in the autumn are going to be our stayers in the spring," he said.
