Herbert Power trio chasing big Cups entry

Thursday 11 October 2018, 5:21pm

Victory in the Herbert Power Stakes will make life easier for three European horses being aimed at starts in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups.

A Prince Of Arran, Prize Money and Yucatan run in Saturday's 2400m handicap at Caulfield looking to work their way up the order of entry.

The three remain in the hunt for a Caulfield Cup berth although A Prince Of Arran's primary target is the $7 million Melbourne Cup on November 6.

A Prince Of Arran needs to win on Saturday and be re-handicapped to gain a start in the Melbourne Cup.

The stayer is currently 42nd in the entry order while Prize Money is number 44 and Yucatan 55th.

Natasha Eaton, who has travelled to Australia with the Charlie Fellowes-trained a Prince Of Arran, says the stable is hoping for a good run.

"He's doing everything right down here," Eaton said.

"The mile-and-a-half is a bit sharp but he's in good form and hopefully things will go our way.

"We all come down here wanting to win it and realistically he has to, to get into the Melbourne Cup."

Eaton believes the Caulfield lay-out should suit A Prince Of Arran and says his form overseas stacks up for his first Australian start.

"He likes a flat track and he handles fast ground," Eaton said.

"We'll have to take them on and see what the outcome is."

Part-owner Nick Williams said the Aidan O'Brien Yucatan had pleased the stable since his arrival.

"When these horses get off the plane, they're a bit of wait and see," Williams said.

Of the three internationals, Yucatan ($10) is the most favoured ahead of A Prince Of Arran ($15) and Prize Money ($26) with the Chris Waller-trained Brimham Rocks the $5 favourite.
