Trainer gives Ichikawa vote of confidence

Rosehill trainer Steven Wilson is confident apprentice Yusuke Ichikawa won't be overawed when he rides Just As Cosmic in The Roses at Doomben on Saturday.

Wilson had the option of booking a high-profile jockey to ride Just As Cosmic but has given Ichikawa his vote of confidence.

"He's a good kid, he's having a go and he knows this filly back to front," Wilson said.

"Because he rides her every day he knows exactly what she can and can't do and I thought it was a better option to keep him on rather than book someone who isn't as familiar with her."

Ichikawa has ridden Just As Cosmic to wins at Hawkesbury, on protest, and at Canterbury but missed her latest victory at Wagga Wagga on May 3 when he was serving a careless riding suspension.

Just As Cosmic hasn't raced beyond 1600m but Wilson is confident she will appreciate the extra 400m in the Roses.

"Her sister She's Cosmic can run 2600 metres and at Wagga she was running through the line," Wilson said.

"After the race Chad (Schofield) said she'll run 2000 metres no problem at all."

The filly has impressed Wilson with her progress since winning at Wagga Wagga.

"Since her last run she's put on weight, she's eating good and thriving with racing," he said.

"She's all dappled up, looks great and I couldn't fault her."

Track conditions aren't a concern for Wilson.

"Her sister won two in a row in the heavy and I've worked her in the wet and on the dry and she goes just as good," he said.

Wilson has been training at Rosehill for the past seven years after spending 10 years working for Tim Donnelly when he was based in Sydney as well as having a stint as foreman for Ron Quinton at Randwick.
