Zamex appreciates even playing field

Saturday 16 June 2018, 12:43pm

Well-bred Zamex has shown his appreciation for an even playing track by winning the Ipswich Mile.

Zamex ($10) was one of four runners for trainer Matt Dunn in the 1666m race, which often produces a good future stayer.

The gelding did the best of the quartet, beating Tony Gollan's El Campeador ($15) by three-quarters of a length on Saturday, with a short neck to Denbern ($4.40) in third.

Dunn says Zamex had been disadvantaged by tracks that were leader-biased in recent weeks.

"But today he was able to get onto a track which was playing evenly right across it. He was able to get back and storm home," Dunn said.

Zamex was bred by Gold Coast racing identity Geoff Kerrison and is by New Zealand Derby winner Cheval De Troy.

"But I don't think Zamex would stay so we will probably keep him around this distance. I do think he has a future," Dunn said.
