Noire earns crack at Tiara with victory

Saturday 9 June 2018, 5:16pm

Noire has joined Chris Waller's contenders for the Group One Tatts Tiara with an impressive audition at Randwick.

The mare needed to win the Australian Turf Club Sprint (1200m) to justify a trip to Doomben for the fillies and mares weight-for-age feature, and she completed the task in style.

Sent out a $3.40 favourite, Noire recorded the sixth win of her 12-start career by hitting the line 1-1/4 lengths clear of Savvan ($8).

Star Reflection ($7) was a long head third.

Waller's racing manager, Charlie Duckworth, said Noire would join Shillelagh and Invincibella as the stable's representatives in the focal point of the June 23 card.

Noire had to stake her claim for the Tiara in Sydney after drawing barrier 19 for the Group Two Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) at Doomben.

"This whole preparation has been geared towards getting her up to the Tatts Tiara and winning today is enough to send her up," Duckworth said.

"Tye (Angland) was conscious that 1200 was probably a little bit short of her best but he got her rolling in a nice rhythm. She looked the winner from the top of the straight," he said.

Invincibella won the Dane Ripper Stakes while Shillelagh warmed up for the Tiara by running sixth in the Group One Stradbroke Handicap (1350m).

Angland ended the day with a treble after also saluting on I Am Serious and Jolly Honour in the ATC Owner Benefits Card Mile and TAB.com.au Handicap, respectively.
