Ethan Brown cops eight-meet ban at Sandown

Wednesday 6 June 2018, 5:49pm

Apprentice Ethan Brown's shot at winning the Melbourne jockeys' premiership has taken a minor hit after he incurred a careless riding suspension at Sandown.

He sits third in the premiership race with 42 winners, four behind Damian Lane who rode a double on Wednesday to take top spot, one win clear of Craig Williams.

Brown was suspended for eight meetings on a careless riding charge aboard Helcrimson in the Ladbrokes Back Yourself Handicap.

Racing Victoria stewards said Brown rode his mount out when not sufficiently clear of Lachie King on Sequoia Lady, causing King to steady and avoid the heels of Potemkin, ridden by Jack Martin.

They said the charge fell into the low range, while Brown had ridden in 318 races since his last suspension in December.

The ban commences after he rides at Sandown next Wednesday and he returns in time for the Flemington meeting on June 23, meaning he'll miss only one metropolitan meeting.

Brown was also fined $500 for failing to weigh-in after riding Demolition in the Dream Thoroughbreds Handicap.

Michael Walker was fined $200 for failing to ride Layel, his second winner of the afternoon, out to the finish line of the Clanbrooke Racing Handicap.
