Tim Clark will have the backing of Sydney's leading trainer when he tries to build on an impressive return to Australian racing at Canterbury on Wednesday.

Clark collected the Wagga Wagga Gold Cup and the Gold Coast Guineas in his first week back from Hong Kong, ensuring his services will be in as much demand as they were before he left in 2011.

The former champion Sydney apprentice rode 28 winners in his first Hong Kong season before cutting short his term in the Asian racing capital last month after 31 victories in 2012-2013.

He will team up with Chris Waller for two of his four Canterbury rides with Instrumentalist and Loophole considered strong chances in their respective races.

"It was important for me to try and ride some winners straight away when I did get back just to show people that I'm back and riding OK," Clark said.

"I have been fortunate enough to pick up some good rides. Not only Academus (at the Gold Coast) but Scream Machine in the Wagga Cup and it was lovely both were able to win."

Instrumentalist will contest the Lawler Chartered Accountants Handicap (1900m), ready to win after two Australian starts since coming from England.

A winner up to 2800m in two England victories, Instrumentalist made late ground in a Newcastle race last month, running on from the back to finish a close fourth to Payteevee, a rival once again on Wednesday.

Like his stablemate, Loophole is also close to a peak run at his third start back in for the Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Trust Handicap (1550m).

A maiden after six starts, Loophoole confirmed he was on the verge of breaking through with a last-start third to Lucky Lago at Warwick Farm.

The colt takes on a field that includes three-year-olds who promise to be better than midweek horses but his chances will be assisted with the rails draw.
